I believe I gave the first book a slightly negative review because I felt that Benjamin Medrano had taken the plot into an area he just couldn't write very well. Well, if he struggled in book 1, he managed to come back to his wheelhouse in book 2. The characters are alive, the villains are typically stupid, but powerful, and the stakes keep rising.If I had any complaint its mostly that it felt like Benjamin wants to spread around the largesse too much when it comes to lesbian love and affection. His characters get way too many suitors and hopeful supplicants in his recent books. His Ancient Dreams series really has Phynis and Sistina as the main couple although the Gems do get worked into the relationship by magic. Here so many different ladies are vying for Kitania's attention that you almost need a playbook. And Benjamin doesn't really give any of them a fair writeup in my opinion.But that's a pet peeve. The story is very good, the action once it starts up is frenetic and fun, so I'll give it a low 4 stars. The Ancient Dreams series is vastly superior to this, but this is still worth reading.
Let's be honest, I always love books by Benjamin Medrano. I know everybody says the books is slow, but that very pace builds the tension. It can't always be action and explosions. Though we get plenty of those later in the book. I like that we got to see Kit as being a bit more vulnerable. It made her very real to me. One of the best parts of Benjamin Medrano's writing is just how diverse his characters are and the amazing depth they show. As always, I look forward to the next book in the series.
I love all of this authors books and eagerly await the next installment.This is a good middle book of the series.Anyways I have preordered the next book.

The amount of powerful complex sapphic women is absolutely fantastic and I hope they wind up in some polyamorous arrangement by the end
